Hascombe Hill

Surrey

A beautiful and very peaceful route around Hascombe Hill passing through Nore Hanger and Creek Copse. If you have the time I would recommend the extra "there and back" path to gaze at the modern stone circle. Make sure you also don't miss the sculpture at the top of Hascombe Hill fort and the stunning St. Peters church interior.

Did you know

The stone circle near Loxhill and Hascombe was built between 1995 & 1997 by the Megalithic Order of Druids using people power and wooden posts. It consists of 18 stones and marks important solar and lunar rising and setting points.

The Hascombe hillfort occupied around 1BC encloses the thick wooded area. The steep sides of the fort were scarped at the top to make them almost unassailable. In the early 19th century it became an important naval telegraph station, using a mechanical form of semaphore. A chain of these stations linked London with Portsmouth.

St Peter's church, Hascombe was rebuilt in the style of a 13th century church in 1864. The only pre Victorian relic is the 15th century chancel screen, which has been elaborately decorated in colour. The nave walls are painted with the 'miraculous draught of fishes' in gold and blue.
